Bakelite in cookware and cancer

Postby GrouseMan » Sat Jan 11, 2014 12:08 am

Everyone starts grasping for reasons that they get cancer. There are NONE.... Rationally speaking there is no way to know what leads up to the conditions in your colon that result in the mutations that lead to the adenocarcinoma. Likely as not a stray cosmic ray from outer space could have caused it, and your immune system didn't recognize it in time to fix it (ie cause it to die without replicating). You may have ate a peanut, potato or other vegetable that might have contain an abnormal amount of an natural occurring plant toxin produced by the plant to ward off a mold infection! I am a medicinal chemist. I spent many years doing anti-cancer drug discovery. I have myself been exposed to many terrible known cancer causing chemicals nearly on a daily basis. I am sure I have inadvertently inhaled and ingested many of them at one point or another. Its a wonder I don't have cancer. But my wife on the other hand who has always lead a pretty damn healthy lifestyle, exercised and ate right ended up with stage IV mCRC! Pretty ironic - I work with toxic materials in an attempt to create drugs to treat cancer and my wife gets it! I have read many studies over the years about this and that causing cancer. The big one now is bis-phenol-A.... Its responsible for all our ill's depending on what you read. Thing is the statistics are tenuous at best, most of the time. Rats also spontaneously get tumors. And particularly those used back in the 30 and 40's before we knew much about genetics, and just used any old rat, species or group. Now a days we are very careful about the genetic makeup of the animal used. They nearly have to be clones of one an other...

In the old Bakelite study the likely cause of the tumor was long term inflammation from the disk implant. Today we are beginning to understand that much of this is due to long term inflammatory processes. The biochemical signaling gets out of control... Mesothelioma is a good example.... Chemically speaking asbestos is pretty near inert. It doesn't interact chemically with the cells. Certainly doesn't dissolve or anything. A particular crystal form of it is mostly responsible for its cancer causing effect, and this happens because it acts as a physical irritant in the lungs. A sharp pointy thing constantly poking the insides of ones lung.

Its not any one thing responsible. Your individual genetics, overall health, stress and environmental exposure to a myriad of things over your life time is what put you in harms way. Genetics play probably the biggest part I think. We can't explain yet why some families seem to manage never to get cancer until they are very old. The old adage is that you live long enough you will likely get cancer is very true... As we get old mutations start to accumulate. In my own family, cancer is hardly known at all even amongst the smokers. Last member diagnosed was my great grandmother and then not diagnosed until her 90's with rectal cancer. Most all members of my family have lived into their 90's cancer free. My wife's family grandparents, mom and dad were smokers. Her grandmother lived pretty healthy life into her 90's.. But both her parents ended up with some form of cancer in their 70's. Her mother breast cancer (Beat it so far), her father prostate cancer (died from an infection not cancer)... Turns out her moms brother had FAP, but the others did not.

Best thing to do is take these studies with a grain of salt. Particularly those where the only information is from an animal model, with limited numbers. It needs to be very large groups of people, and significant. A few percent isn't significant in my book.
