The Vortex Screen
I know this is a few months old but I just found this thread. I have had my Screens for a few years and they smoke all of the speakers I've ever had before including my very well reviewed Celestion SL6S's and Infinity RSII B's. The soundstage of the Screen is phenomenal and they do everything else so well I have never even though of upgrading since buying these in . I paid the huge amout of $400 for these on ebay and It would take many times that to get anything comparable. Even well used. I have what I believe are some of the last of the California made systems bought new in and they are very well balanced. They do require room to breath though. The single box model was made several years earlier and it's a shame yours were damaged. The later models are a two piece system with a time aligned mid and tweeter in a configuration similar to a Vandesteen with the stretch cloth sock that hides the small enclosures of the top module to give a boxy appearance. I know from the factory paperwork that Von Schweikert used Dynaudio and Audax drivers along with his own crossover design.
I do have all the documentation and a copy of the excellent Stereophile review in which these are spoken of as being considerably better than Thiel, Snelll and the highly regarded Vandersteen 2c. If you are interested I can send you copies.
